Bilstein was founded in 1873, its original success coming from its range of innovative metal window fittings and hardware sold under the name AUBI.  However, it wasn’t until 1928 that Bilstein began manufacturing bumpers for the automotive industry and by 1954 had diversified as Bilstein began to realize the importance of vibration damping in automobiles.  The business has focused on vibration technology ever since.  1957 saw the first production implementation of gas-pressure shock absorbers in Mercedes-Benz automobiles, a Bilstein produced damper which transformed the behaviour of traditional oil filled dampers and indeed changed the way dampers have been designed and built ever since.

The Bilstein Audi R8 LMS crests the famous jump at Pflantzgarten during the Nurburgring 24 hours race.

This advance in technology developed by Bilstein at their engineering base at Ennepetal was soon adopted by the leading motorsport teams.  This is a tradition which continues today with the sports and competition damper fabrication still based at the same plant.
In 1961 Bilstein entered motorsports for the first time and by 1989 all DTM (German Touring Car Championship) cars are fitted with their Bilstein shocks. In 1998 production of air-suspension modules begins in Mandern, Germany.
